Soothe Your Child's Nerves About Braces

Is your child or teenager getting braces this year?

Are they excited, or are they nervous about the process?

It’s very common for kids and teens to be nervous before they get braces. Depending on which type of braces they get (traditional metal braces, or clear braces like Invisalign), the process may differ, but there are common aspects that you should know to help them feel better about what’s coming up.

The Process of Getting Braces with Experienced Orthodontists in Ann Arbor

The “best” age to get braces is generally between ages 10 and 14. For most types of braces, the initial process takes about 1-2 hours. The process of getting braces put on doesn’t hurt, but having your mouth open for a long time will usually make your teeth, mouth, and jaw sore afterwards.

According to Oral-B, here are some tips for soothing nerves and dealing with the pain of getting braces:

•    Make sure your child or teen knows that braces aren’t forever, and the end result is a beautiful, straight smile!

•    Take photos of your child’s progression through treatment to get them excited about the progress they’re making. They’ll have a serious confidence boost seeing their teeth improve over time.

•    Stick to soft foods for the first day or two after getting braces. Soup, mashed potatoes, yogurt, milkshakes, and similar foods are usually helpful.

•    Try using an over-the-counter anesthetic like Anbesol or Orajel to temporarily numb the painful areas of your child’s mouth after getting braces. The gel will numb the spot and eliminate the pain for a limited time.

•    Remember:  things will get better! Your child’s mouth will adjust to the braces and the pain and irritation will go away. It will all get easier from there!
