What to Do in Case of Emergency

Call our office as soon as possible if you break or loosen any of your appliances. Please do not come directly to the office – by calling us, you will allow us to create a time to see you. Even if you have a regular appointment scheduled, call us mmediately to notify us if you need an appliance repaired.

Loose Brackets or Bands

Call our office immediately if a wire, bracket or band is loose and we will fit you in. If it is after hours, carefully sterilize fingernail clippers with alcohol and clip the wire right up to the next secured bracket. Give us a call as soon as possible on the next business day.

Wire Irritations

Depending on where the irritating wire is, you may be able to remedy the problem on your own. If you can reach it with a cotton swab, try to move the wire to a new position so it will not hurt the mouth. If you are unable to do that, placing wax or cotton over the area can prevent the irritation. Clipping the end of the wire, right up to the bracket, is another option, again using sterilized fingernail clippers. If all else fails, give us a call and we’ll schedule an appointment to have it taken care of.

Lost Separators

This is not always an emergency, as many patients will lose a separator or two during the course of their treatment. If you are unable to get it back in, call our office to see if you need to come have it replaced. In some situations, it is not a big deal, and we will just have you wait until your next appointment.

Discomfort with Orthodontic Treatment

This is absolutely normal following the initial placement of the braces, as well as following any appointments in which they are readjusted. An acetaminophen will often temporarily relieve the pain until your teeth are used to the new alignment.
