Teeth Safety Tips For Kids This Spring

Teeth Safety Tips For Kids This Spring
Posted on 04/14/2016

Now that springtime is here, many of the patients we see at our Ann Arbor and Taylor orthodontics offices are gearing up for spring sports like soccer, baseball, softball, field hockey, and rugby. While we encourage our patients to take part in sports as it is good for both the mind and body, we do want to remind those of you playing sports of how important it is to protect your teeth. It only takes one fall or a single blow to the face from a ball or flying elbow to do damage to your teeth as well as the orthodontic appliances you are wearing.

Play It Safe With A Mouthguard

Regardless of if you are on the soccer pitch or softball field, it is important to use the right sporting equipment that includes a protective mouthguard. A mouthguard can go far in helping you avoid serious injuries to your mouth that can easily result from falling down or being struck in the face. Even though mouthguards have been proven to drastically reduce the risk for facial and mouth injuries, many sports still do not require one to be worn. That is why we are reminding all of our patients who play sports to wear a protective mouthguard both during practice and regulation play.

Sports & Tooth Damage

Even though teeth may not be your first thought when considering injuries, they are at high risk for damage among athletes of all ages. The American Dental Association (ADA) tells us that over one-third of all knocked out teeth occur during some type of sports-related accident or mishap.

The Best Mouthguard To Use

We do not recommend using the low quality “stock” mouthguards you can find at local department stores, as these mouthguards are typically ill fitting and inferior when it comes to protecting your smile. It is much better to wear a high quality mouthguard that is made just for you by a specialist using a mold of your teeth.

For those of you with braces bonded to your teeth, there are orthodontic mouthguards for sale online and offline that are made to fit over your braces. A few good brands to look for are ShockDoctor, OrthoGuard and UnderArmour. These mouthguards come in different sizes, styles, and colors and are very affordable.
