Are you about to begin the journey of wearing invisible aligners?

Do you know what to expect while wearing Invisalign?

The first week or so getting used to Invisalign is a big change if you don’t know what to expect. Many orthodontists say the best advice for people about to begin wearing clear aligners is to establish a consistent, healthy routine that you can maintain throughout your treatment.

Here are 5 tips to get your smile journey on the right track and ensure maximum results during the teeth alignment process:

1)  Speak up: The day you get your first aligners is a big day! There are a lot of instructions and information you need to remember. Not to mention these new things in your mouth! If you have questions or need clarification, ask! Your doctor will ensure the perfect fit of your aligners, and since each set is individually trimmed to your specific gum line there should be no discomfort, but if there is (sharp edges for example) you need to let them know! It’s an easy fix and they can show you how to fix it if any future trays have the same problem.

2) Dealing with pain and discomfort: Invisalign works by making tiny movements with each tray, making it much more comfortable than traditional braces. When you start wearing each new set of aligners, you may feel a little extra pressure or discomfort for the first few days, which is totally normal. Eating softer foods for a few days or taking an over the counter pain reliever may help.

3) Start a daily aligner routine and stick to it: Adjusting to your new lifestyle with Invisalign can be new and challenging if you don’t have a routine. You’ll be taking them out often, which is okay, but the flexibility of clear aligners over traditional braces that can’t be removed means your treatment might have to be extended if you don’t wear your aligners for the recommended 18-22 hours. Try an app like TrayMinder, which tracks how long you’ve worn (or not worn) your aligners, and reminds you when to change to a new set of trays. You can also pick a day out of the week and know that day is your new aligner day!

4) Keep your orthodontist in the loop: That’s what they are there for! If you’ve missed time in your aligners, they aren’t fitting right or they are uncomfortable (because they shouldn’t be) call your office. They will have advice such as to wear a tray a little longer, or come into the office so that they can get you back on track! Everyone has one goal, to get you the smile of your dreams! So don’t try to go it alone.

5) Keep your trays clean (and clear): This might seem like a no-brainer, but everyone cheats just a little bit wearing their aligners - finishing the last 2 sips of coffee or having a glass of white wine with their aligners still in. It’s not the worst thing you can do, but don’t make it a habit! Ask your orthodontist about how to keep your aligners clean and clear throughout your treatment.
