DIY-Braces.jpgLately, we've been noticing a resurgence in a trend that we had hoped was gone for good: DIY braces. As a premier orthodontist serving the Taylor and Ann Arbor, MI areas, we're passionate about helping people improve their smiles, but DIY braces are no way to do it. While they may seem like a clever way to get a better smile, DIY braces are actually incredibly dangerous and have the potential to destroy your natural smile. At Stieper & Brust Orthodontics, we want you to be as informed as possible, so let's take a look at what's so wrong with do-it-yourself braces.

What Are DIY Braces?

Simply put, DIY braces are a trend where people use rubber bands, string, and other household materials to attempt to move their teeth and improve their smile without the help of an orthodontist. Chiefly, the trend is affecting teens, as they're the most common age demographic for braces and also may not know the dangers of DIY braces. While DIY braces may seem clever or cute at first, the truth is, there's a sinister reality behind this new craze.

Why DIY Braces Are Dangerous

On the surface, orthodontics is the practice of applying forces to the teeth to influence tooth movement and improve the smile – but the truth is, it's much more complicated than that. The appliances and tools used in orthodontics are engineered to apply precise, finely calibrated forces to the teeth, and orthodontists go through years of additional schooling to master them. In comparison, the materials used in DIY braces apply a crude, blunt force to the teeth. Not only will this fail to effectively move teeth, but it can also cut off blood supply to the tooth root, eventually causing the tooth to die and fall out. If left in for long enough, DIY braces can permanently damage the smile, causing the need for repairs and restorative procedures that can easily cost tens of thousands of dollars.
